Joplin Arts Fest is excited to welcome painter Natalie Avondet to our 10th Anniversary show at the Cornell Complex in downtown Joplin. Her dramatic portraits will be on the Leggett & Platt Green this September 20 & 21.
“I use traditional materials (acrylic on canvas) in an unconventional way. To begin I reverse the color palette to create a negative, if you will. I then layer, swirl or scrape what is to be the final colors on top.
It is the combination of bright hues and techniques that bring the subject matter to life. My subject is the face of perseverance and moxie. The ability to continue on in spite of the odds.
Much like a forensic artist, I create an image by combining different traits of from various people. I use the bright hues to bring out the subject. The subject is further brought to life through spray painting or hand painting bold encouraging words.”
