Joplin Arts Fest is excited to welcome another new artist, Kansas City’s Sean Ponder, to our 10th Anniversary show at the Cornell Complex in downtown Joplin.
His tactile ceramic pieces will be on the Leggett & Platt Green this September 20 & 21.
Sean Ponder discovered at a young age, a desire to help others, which has led him to utilize his artistic ability to address societal issues and pursue life as an educator. Witnessing families torn apart by addiction, inspired a series of works that depicts the process of recovery and the resulting transformation.
Sean was drawn to clay due to its basic elemental nature, tactile qualities, and processes involved: water and earth can be formed, and then through the process of firing, become forms that are both functional and artistic. From the composition of clay, to the relationship between the vessel and human form, Ponder explores individual works as well as installations and conceptual works.
Ponder discovered a new form of pottery called Micaceous cookware. This form of pottery is native to New Mexico and was once an extinct technique that has been revived. The clay being used is native to New Mexico. It is dug, processed and transported by Ponder to bring awareness to the region.
